Default If you live in the US, dont go to oakland, california...

Well, most of my life I've stayed away from Oakland, however on Saturday I was obligated to go to a track meet for my nephews... worst mistake ever!

We were there about an hour before I decided to go get my book out of the car, which was conveniently parked away from most other cars by a basball field. I had backpack with my schoolbooks in it, my homework, flash drives, and a laptop in the trunk of the car. While getting my book out of the trunk I remember looking around to see if anyone was watching, however I later realized that I overlooked the basball field next to me. Well about another hour later at the meet I had decided to go get some playing cards out of the car to entertain myself. I opened the trunk and was horrified to see all of its' contents gone.

I ran around the car and saw that the right rear-passenger window had completely been smashed in and only a few shards of glass hung on frame. I started into a casual walk towards the stands to inform my family and potentially get help and start a search, as the theft couldn't have happened too long ago and the culprits may have been in the area. About half way to the stands what had happened just started to sink in and I started into a mad dash that got the attention of more people than I intended. Well after alot of tears and yelling we called the police. Oakland police=hopeless. Even though it just happened they had no one to send and said they would make stupid phone report within 24 hrs! OMG!!! WTF Justice?!

Ended up going to the station in person to file the report. I had alot of genius poetry and papers and whatnot saved in the flashdrives which were invaluable to me, and the books in the bag alone were about 500$, the laptop was a whooping 2,500$ and the window replacement is gonna cost another 1,000$, and about another 50$ in cash was taken not to mention my address was with my books and they may have stolen a house key, so i had to replace the locks for security measures. There was no insurance on the laptop, so i wont be getting another for god knows how long. Yeah, my family puts the blame on me for the most part for even having all that stuff in the trunk to begin with, and for not being more careful of who was watching.
Most of my instructors will likely be sympathetic to my situation, but im still abhorred, you'd be amazed at how much poetry was in there, to the point were was thinking of publising some of it. Oh yeah, and no other car was broken into, just mine WTF
and they left my cellphone of all things, my geometry, my spanish, and my religion work, god...

Sorry for your loss. If your car had more than just liability insurance then your property and damage may be covered.

OMG I'm really sorry that happened to you D; I would probably be a bit frightened too, you obviously are since you changed your locks (probably wise since they had your address). It should not cost that much to change a window WTF. Also check your house insurance it might cover your laptop or some of the other items - read the small print or call the insurance co. The flash drives and laptop are a real killer because they held your poetry and work. That's why I got insurance for my laptop and always back things up. Always back up stuff you keep on a flash drive or laptop and keep it somewhere safe. You should be able to keep a flash drive in your wallet or one of those neck staps. My bro spent a whole weekend looking for his flashdrive when he lost it. I know this doesn't sound like much help now.

I normally keep my laptop with me rather than leaving it in the car, although the few times I left it in there I was worried all the time it would be stolen. My window got smashed too once but nothing valuable inside so just a little damage was done.

Hide your laptop under the seat or something (careful not to scratch it).

Cellphones are not worth stealing, they can easily be blocked with 1 call to the carrier/network..this is why there is so many "blocked" phones on Ebay.

1) This happens mostly everywhere in the world, not just oakland.

2) If someone was going to break into a car, they'd break into a car away from the other cars, like yours. Probably would of been prevented if you parked near other cars.

Gotta love Poor people. they go to any extent to steal stuff. and yeah.. Us has no justice at all. So happy that I'm leaving this hellhole soon. Personally I've had my car broken into TWO times, the first time they smashed out my passenger side window and stole my radio deck and all of my CD's, which was alot of moneys worth.. then the second time it happend to my grandpas truck, i was parked outside a friends house and someone yet again smashed out the passengers side window and stole my brand new $200 camera and all of my hair products and makeup, which cost me so much. So i know where you're coming from on that one with all of the frustration.. sorry about the loss though.

Hey man, at least it was just stuff that got stolen. One time in mid town Manhattan, I was mug at gun point for what? my wallet with 50 bucks in it and a watch! NYPD never get them back, no surprise there really.

Moved to England a while back, a friend got mug at knife point in mid town Manchester. Different town same shit, I say.

Thefts are idiots. I'd like to line up a bunch of thefts and just go 1 by 1 and beat them in the face. Mabey a wooden baseball bat? Aluminum?

Yea...I got my iPod stolen.

Tazer? Nightstick?

Sucks to get something stolen thats for sure, sorry for your loss, really does suck.

That is why I don't go to Oakland, if I ever do go there. I wouldn't bring anything valuable.

Hayward, Oakland, Richmond and pretty much any city around them have a high crime rate. Sorry for your loss.

Wow, something got stolen in California! This just can't be true, not with the Terminator as the big bad govinator.

Well it sucks but I think pretty much everyone knows stuff gets stolen in California every day, it's almost like their state sport...

What gets me is no body saw someone breaking into a car and stealing all of that stuff, either they were really sly about it or people are bigger morons than I thought they are.

Maybe the cops need to be paid on commission for catching thieves and muggers. Last week some cops caught someone breaking into a house a few doors down from mine OMFG. I never seen one *walking* (like on foot) around here and the first time they do, they catch someone w00t.

First rule is don't ever leave valuables in your car!
If you have to leave them in your car, don't put it somewhere it is visible. Put it in the trunk or put other stuff over the valuables items. Keep it discreet.
Like someone mentioned, since you parked your car so far away from the others, you basically made a target of yourself. But it is unfortunate what happened to you. Besides, Oakland isn't a safe area anyway.
